the check engine light comes on after a few miles of driving and stays on until i shut off the car. then it will stay off and come back on after a few miles

Have the computer scanned for codes. You can have this done for free as some auto parts stores! The code will tell you what problem needs to be fixed!
If I were to guess, I would say you have an O2 sensor problem, but without a scan, that is ONLY a guess!

turn the key 3 times fast to off and on position, on the thirt time leave the key on, see the check engine light flashes, read the code like this, for example if it is the code 32, check engiune light will flash as flowing three times and stop three times and stop three times and stop. three times it will tell you the code thirty and then for the digit 2 , it will flash 2 times and stop , 2 times and stop, 2 times and stop. wright the code and get the repair manual for your car, go to the emission chapter and you will find the meaning of that code
