I am about to start my own small business and want to make sure I am doing things right the first time. I would like to find a good, honest, local accountant (not necessarily a CPA) to guide me through this process. How would I go about finding such a person?

I am located in Utah County, UT. The business is a consulting/education company with 8 employees. I would like an accountant with experience setting up small businesses who can guide me through the process and handle the taxes for the company.

I agree with all of the others, however you may not need an accountant for every day accounting and bookkeeping. Take a look at the Intuit site for QuickBooks. I am a Certifed Quickbooks ProAdvisor and highly recommend the software. There is enough in the package to help you get started. YES, YOU STILLNEED AN ACCOUNTANT. I am sourcing two good links for you to look at. jumpup is a new business source that offer a great deal of support. and the intuit link will get you to the software for accounting that you will need.

Should you need any additional help contact me via e-mail.

Your best bet is to have a lawyer help you establish your business and assist in any state registration of your company. That lawyer would then probably be able to let you know of a CPA firm that could help you. Getting just any accountant to help you is probably a bad idea. Many accountants do not have the experience to be strong business advisors. A company that is a Public Accounting firm specializes in being business advisors.

First of all, who are you ? Where are you located? Are you near any colleges with business schools ? Many colleges have students majoring in Business who are probably interning in a course who might help with the initial requirements. Regardless of the business you have in mind , make sure you have enough financing of your own or committed so that you are adequately financed for the near future. Nothing is worse than having to skimp.
