i get told a lot that I'm "different". I think it's because I'm very helpful. I always feel bad for people, and LOVE helping others. I once gave up my lunch money to buy a random person a lunch, and love giving people mints or cupcakes if I bring them to school. I'll wait at the door and hold it open for people even if they're halfway up the stairs, and I love picking up people's garbage that they leave laying around after lunch.
I can't figure out why exactly I'm like this. It's not to get more friends, and I'm sure a lot of people think it is because I only have a few friends, but I also think it's because I was made fun of when I was younger and I NEVER want anyone to go through what I did. What do you think? And is it bad? No one really takes advantage of me, and if they did I probably wouldn't care anyways. And should I change my attitude? Because my friend says I'm nuts.

I don't think it's bad, as long as you still have your OWN life in addition to helping other people. Make sure you have the skills to be assertive, to ask for what YOU need.

I was a lot like you when I was younger. I still spend many hours a week helping other people in ways I enjoy and they appreciate (even when they don't know who did the nice deed).

Just realize that most people aren't like that, or may not appreciate or may question your efforts. Do the good the spirit leads you to do, without completely sacrificing yourself.

I guess it depends on how enthusiastic you are about it. If someone I didn't know was really, really nice to me, I think it might come off looking phony or patronizing. If I was a coworker or something, eventually I would realize you were being genuine, but as a stranger I might eye you differently. That doesn't mean you should quit being nice to people, it just means that depending on people's life experiences, you're going to get positive and negative responses.

There's nothing wrong with being overly nice, as long as you recognize when people are trying to take advantage of you in a bad way. what goes around comes around.
