I've got a non-USB DSL modem from my internet provider and I like to share my connection with a PC and a Mac. Do I have to get a router?, and in that case, what type?.

Get a simple in-expensive hub. Modem to hub and 2 or more computers including the MAC to the hub. A router is better but, the configuration can be difficult. Not so with a hub.

To hardwire, all you need is a router with Ethernet ports. Each computer can connect to the router, and then to the modem through the router. Just make sure both computers are using the same domain or work group setting.

If you are going wireless, it is perhaps a little harder.

This unit can be configured while connected to a PC Ethernet port as an access point, and then it can be unplugged from the pc and plugged into a mac's Ethernet port, and will then connect you to the wireless network. I have used this on two hybrid systems and have had no trouble setting it up. The cost is a third of what an aircard for your mac would cost.

A router is one option, installing another network card is another, I'm assuming the pc has the internet, and the mac has a network card already.
Just buy a crossover cable(twisted pair) plug into the second NIC on the pc, and into the macs NIC, the mac should find the connection assuming the NIC is working and configured correctly, then you just need to set up how to manage the connection through whatever mac/os you use.........

yes if u want to have them on the internet at the same time. If you just need internet then you can pick up a router for that that has wireless too at walmart for $40. Also if your mac has built-in wireless you can use the wireless function of the router and make your mac look even better!!!

Just use a router to split your incoming signal from your DSL co. to both computers. Go to tigerdirect.com and check them out. Pick up a non wireless one at Wal Mart for 20 bucks or a tad more for wireless.... million different choices.

I plug the ethernat cable that goes into the PC into my Mac. I first have to turn the modem off, then switch the cable, then on. It works for me.
