When you think classic rock, who's voice do you think of?

PinkFloyd1962: While David Gilmour is one of my favorite vocalist, I never connected him with the classic rock sound. I was thinking along the lines of Robert Plant or Ian Gillan.
But all these answers are great!

Paul Rodgers...best vocalist ever, in my opinion.

I like the answer that said Marc Bolan. I've always loved his wispy soft voice. It comes across as real cool and slick.

David Bowie has a good one, unique without being far out or weird.

Ray Davies and Dave Davies both do excellent jobs on vocals.

I'd say Robert Plant even though I'm not his biggest fan just because he's been imitated so much it must be classic.

Even though there are a lot of other vocalists I like better, I'm going to choose Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. Doesn't get much more Classic Rock than that

Robert Plant is the first one that pops into my head. I read in the newspaper today that Zeppelin are the the leaders of a '1970's revival'. And apparently everyone will start dressing in clothes from the 70's again. It even showed pictures of a man and woman dressed in Zeppelin t-shirts and flares and fur coats, and the man in a silk scarf

I'll believe it when i see it

I always think of John Kay, Ian Hunter, David Bowie, Ronnie Van Zant, Paul Rodgers, Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Rob Halford, Greg Allman, Steve Miller, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Freddie Mercury, Steve Mariott, Peter Frampton, Greg Rollie, Leslie West, J. Geils, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltry, John Fogherty, Jim Morrison, Stevie Nicks, Jeff Lynne, Roger Hodgson, John Anderson, Ray Davies, Tom Petty, Ronnie James Dio, Steve Walsh (Kansas), Ozzy Osbourne, Joe Walsh, Geddy Lee, Brad Delp(Kansas), Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Jerry Garcia, Ian Anderson, David Lee Roth, Grace Slick, Greg Lake, Mark Farner, whenever I think of classic rock vocalists.
But one that really stands out for me is Burton Cummings (big Guess Who fan).

Forget about the awful "power ballads" and Lou Gramm from Foreigner stands out as having a classic rock voice.

Oooohhhh!

All of these for me :~

Robert Plant
Joe Cocker
Janis Joplin
Stevie Nicks
Peter Green
Jimi Hendrix
Roger Daltry
Grace Slick

The men have to be able to both 'growl' and be tender {convey emotion}, and the women need that 'below the belt' vocal quality.

Marc Bolan... in an ideal world.

Um... I guess Ian Hunter. Raspy and waily at the same time... uber classic rock. And... I actually like him.
