We just switched our internet connection on CenturyTel, and now the router won't work with the router we have. It's a Linksys wireless router, and the modem is a Westell. What do I need to do to make it work?

The most common cause of this is a router that is trying to use the same IP address that the modem uses.

Go into the web based set up program for the router, and change the IP address to another. IF it is 192.168.0.1 now switch it to 192.168.2.1 for example. This will allow the two to work together.

I have had the same problem with my SBC DSL modem and a Linksys router. Once I changed the IP address of the router, the problems went away. Give it a try.

Also remember to start the modem and let it lock into the internet, before you start the router (leave the router off or unplugged.) Then once the modem has all but the LAN lights on, start the router and let it lock into the system. Then you should be able to connect to the router.

DSL Modem Ethernet Port plugs into the WAN port (not the Ethernet port) on the Wireless router with a Straight Through CAT 5 cable.

The default settings on the wireless router will work. All you need to do is setup encryption on the wireless link.
To default the router press in the little hidden button on the rear and hlold it in for 20 seconds.

Jim, most people just plug in there router and expect it to work.
There is a thing called a complete Network Reset.
Don't change any settings.
Pull the Power Adapter from the ISP's Modem
Likewise with your wireless Router.
Now you need to wait 5 minutes.
In this order
PLug in your Internet Service Providers MODEM and wait 1 minute.
Now Plug in your Wireless Router and again wait 1 minute.
Now you can restart your computer.
