Answer: The industrial output of the United States.

Why then, given the obvious importance of domestic industry to national security, have we sold our industrial might to China?

The ruthlessness of Stalin to sacrifice wave after wave of his own people against the Germans was what defeated Hitler.

This allowed more US troops to be sent to the pacific against Japan, and when coupled with the US industrial output it gave us a huge advantage over their resource limited nation.

Maybe your answer is wrong?
The H man made a mistake of taking on the Russian winters in sandals and a T shirt.
On the other side - the "bomb(1&2)" might have a lot to do with it.

Haven't you ever contemplated how the US would have reacted if the bomb was dropped in their yard instead? The new media reporting "Gone...... L. A." from one bomb.

Both axis powers brought about their own downfalls irrespective of our industrial might.
Japan failed to secure its resources prior to embarking upon adventurism.
Hitler doomed the German army in 1941 by deciding he could attack and conquer Russia. By fighting on 2 fronts, the German army was decimated in 2 years.
Had Hitler not made that error, we might all be speaking German now.

"What REALLY Defeated Hitler and Japan?"

A united and determined effort by the allied forces.
As a side note, our industrial and military capabilities are just fine.

Not saying that America was wrong in holding out.. they were probably smarter in respects to themselves, (less loss), but they had no real ilitary involvement until after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour.

Poor military planning. If Hitler had the strategy of Alexander the Great, the world would be overrun by Nazis right now.

William is actually right. If japan had not bombed pearl harbor, if we remained neutral, if the Soviet Union had remained their ally and had only one front they would ..well
