From what I understand and have read in the past, unlocked phones that require a SIM card have the most advantages compared to a phone that does not require a SIM card and use CDMA technology instead of GSM or GPRS phones. If you unlock your phone, you are free of your service provider's b.s. and can make calls just as well as a "locked" phone. One thing to keep in mind however is that there may be some limitations to accessing the internet if you have a multimedia device or other services such as edge, HSDPA capabilities and "bloatware" that most service providers offer.
