you have a fox, a hen, and a bag of oats you are bringing to market. You come to a pond with a rowboat that can carry only you and one other thing. How do you get them all across without the fox eating the hen or the hen eating the oats?

First bring the hen, then go back and get the oats & bring back the hen. Then pick up the fox, drop it off, and go back and get the hen again.

ooh, I've heard this one before, but I think it was with something other than oats. I think it was something like seeds, or feed.

There are some variations to how to do it, but basically - you do it like this. At the pond, you:

1. First, you take the hen over. This will leave the fox and the oats alone on the first bank of the pond.
2. On your second trip, you take the oats over...but before you leave, you make sure to grab the hen and take it back with you, so the hen won't eat the oats.
3. While back at the first bank of the pond, you leave your hen there and grab the fox. You take the fox over to the other side and leave it there with the oats, again.
4. You go back one more time, and grab the hen. You get to the other side, and Viola! You have all three and no one ate the other.... hee hee!

Bring the hen across the river. Then return to the other side and pick up the fox leaving the bad of oats. Then bring the hen back to the other side ( the one with the oats). Bring the oats to the side with the fox. And finally bring the hen over.

That's the answer...

First you take the hen, then you come back and take the fox, on your way back you bring the hen back to the first bank. Then you take the corn back, then go back for the hen.

bring the hen across and leave it there. Go back for the fox and bring it across. Swap the fox for the hen and go back. Swap the hen for the oats and go back. Go back for the hen and you are done.
