Ok, my son will be 4 months old on Wednesday, and he's doing this new thing where he takes his blanket and likes to put it over his face while he sucks his thumb ..
He mostly does it while he's in his swing.
I have always been so worried about him soffocating that I would always make sure he was tucked in very well (where he was unable to untuck himself and cover his face).
Well, now he has enough upper body strength that he is untucking himself and putting the blanket over his face.
I have somewhat out smarted him by tucking him tightly in .. and then giving him a small cloth diaper to cuddle, and he puts that over his face while he sucks his thumb .. (it's a lot less material than a baby blanket! .. so I figure there is less chance of him causing any harm)
My question is:
When can I stop worrying about him suffocating himself with the blanket?? At what age do they become coordinated enough that I don't have to stress about the blanket being next to his face??

Jackson has been doing this for awhile and I was very worried, like you, when he first started doing it (almost the exact same age as Landon) However....I realized he's gonna do it no matter what and it usually calms him (ESPECIALLY in the car). And during the teething days. He's 4 1/2 months and he still does it. Pulling almost every inch of blanket to his face. He lets it cover his face, but he can always pull it back off. He's smart enough to know when to pull it off or lets me know when by fussing if he can't get all of it off (short arms! ha ha). Landon's not gonna let it suffocate him either so I wouldn't worry! I worried at first, but now I don't cause he enjoys chewing on it and I'm glad.

You should have stopped worrying about him suffocating on his blanket before you started. Unless he wraps it around his neck and pulls it tight, or unless you're giving him plastic blankets, it's essentially impossible for him to suffocate with it. It's fabric...air flows through it.
If he's coordinated enough to put the blanket there in the first place, he's coordinated enough to move it.

I would get him a baby sized Afghan so that it is a "breathable" material .......... my son is four mths old and I stopped placing receiving blankets in the bed as of last week when I checked on him at 3 in the morning and to my horror found the receiving blanket wrapped around his throat and mouth and nose ....... only Afghans for him for the next year now .......

I worried about that with my son too because (he slept next to me) I would wake up in the middle of the night and his head would be in my arm pit. Weird huh? But, I always wondered about what ifs? It's true I think. I would be really careful. Maybe put him in one of those pajamas with the feet attached so you don't need a blanket. That's what I did because I was just too worried about the whole thing.

My babies all did this, I actually play peek a boo with them )
if he can pull the blanket over his face he should be able to pull the blanket down if he can't breath, just keep a close eye on him he'll be okay :)

My son does that, it's normal, I finally stopped worrying. I figure if he's coordinated enough to put it over his face, he's coordinated enough to move it. Not to mention there's breathing room through the material .. not like it's a plastic bag.
Suffocation is a concern with newborns, but not so much with infants.

If he is ABLE to pull the blanket on and off by himself, suffocation is not a factor. suffocation occurs in young infants because they cannot grasp and move the object that is over their mouth.

Don't give him anything that he can cover his face with! And do not let him sleep with a blanket! My baby's pediatrician said to dress her warm enough that she doesn't need a blanket when she sleeps.

Dont worry about it, babies aren't as uncoordinated as you think and it is just natural instinct to stop yourself from suffocating and as long as his thumb is in his mouth he wont hurt himself
