I know some girls who are perfect. They look just like some of the girls in the magazine. (Of course, those girls are really rare, but still.)

Uh, they ARE airbrushed.
It's not a claim, it's common knowledge.
Didn't you hear about that magazine that airbrushed 15 pounds off of Katie Couric?

How about that beauty magazine that completely fabricated their cover model out of other models?

I was a model from age 7-17 and I've been airbrushed plenty.
I have a light spray of freckles in real life, but they're completely airbrushed out in pretty much every headshot/ad/catalogue.

Here's a girl who was given different earlobes.

You probably do know some girls who are perfect according to what your definition of perfect is. (I'm assuming we are just talking surface perfection). Models ARE airbrushed because most of them simply are not flawless, and if they are, they occasionally have a skin blemish or bruise, or the producer of the magazine feels that her thighs ought to be just a tad thinner etc. etc. etc.

Youth also has it's advantages, notice you said GIRLS and most of the models and fashion magazines etc use young women because with time, women get a little wear and tear....

Lucky for me, my husband is realistic and appreciates my appearance and body now as much as he did back when I was young. When I exclaim over a picture of a star who's had babies and looks near perfect, he says to me, "yeah but she has personal trainers, a chef, a nanny etc. and she's AIRBRUSHED" It makes me feel better! LOL

Most people just believe that no one can look like that in real life, because girls get very low self-esteem sometimes. When girls see a person in a magazine that looks perfect, it's hard for some girls to accept that there is someone more perfect than themselves out there.
Another confusing part of the female psyche.

It's not a claim, it's reality.

Airbrushing is used in all industries: high fashion, advertising, even celebrity photos. You may find girls who are that "perfect," but not all models have perfect skin and hair.

If you don't believe me, watch an episode of "America's Next Top Model" or "The Shot." On ANTM, the photographers openly admit that their photos will need airbrushing.

the claim "models are airbrushed" comes from the statements made by a editors of magazines that they airbrush the models on their pages

It comes from the fact that they are airbrushed. Have you seen those "perfect" girls naked? They all have some flaws. Google airbrushing before after and you'll see what I mean

models ARE sometimes airbrushed. it makes the skin tone one consistency and sometimes adds a little tan, not always though.

Playboy. Back in the 1970s, you had to believe that either women had no genitals, or the photos were retouched.
