The first thing that came to
my mind was green-ware.
This is a term used in the
ceramic and pottery industry
referring to ware that is very
dry and being very dry;
it is also quite fragile.
This is the ware that has
not been placed into the kiln
for maturing the clay body.
When beginning students
first learn to clean the mold lines
off of the ware, sometimes,
they have a tendency to squeeze
the ware too tightly and
it crumbles in their hands.
In pottery it happens
when an artist is putting
one more finishing design
onto a pot,
which has many intricate patterns
involving much carving.
In many cases,
the artist like the beginner
has the tendency to squeeze
the pot just enough to cause
it to crumble in their hands.
I have seen grown men break
down into tears on "objects-d'art",
they have spent over 100 hours
creating that one perfect pot,
only to have it crumble in their hands.
This is very heart breaking,
not only for the artist,
but also for the teacher.
