The only two spiders that are a serious risk in your area are the Brown Recluse (Fiddle Back) and the Black Widow. Neither of these spiders are hairy. They both have slick to shiny skin. Hairy spiders in your area are generally a type of jumping spider. They prefer to set on walls or window screen and other vertical surfaces. The Brown Recluse and Black Widows are almost always found on horizontal surfaces. Since you didn't mention size I think that we can rule out tarantulas that are another hairy spider of your location.

If it is outside in a web it is likely an Araneus or Argiope Orb Spider.

If you need to look further for your spider I suggest: http://whatsthatbug.com/spiders.html

Note: All the names I have given you are common names of families of spiders and not the names of specific species. A spider that you find under this name may not look exactly like the spider you saw but it should be a close relative.

Check Tegenaria domestica. Maybe a jumping spider, but that's what I'd put my money on. If not that, since you're in Corpus Christie, and you get a lot of shipping traffic from the Gulf and S. America, take a look at Phoneutria just to be on the safe side.

It's not a brown recluse, because they're not hairy.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it :\
