Saturn is bright enough for anyone to see but I was not recognized until after the invention of the telescope. Galileo Galiei (1610).
The rings of Saturn played havoc with Galileo by periodically opening and closing and it was not until 1655 that Christiaan Huygens suggested that the planet Saturn did in fact have rings.
