I mean, what triggers our body to laugh? Why aren't we just amused when something is funny? Is there something that makes us do this?

There was a documentary exactly on this issue two days ago on the Discovery Science channel. When you laugh its actually a whole brain activity. the left side of the brain first deals with language side of the laughing stimulus. Then eventually when the right side of the brain "catches" on it can relay the punch line to the rest or the brain which then can recognise to laugh. Its only the punch line of the joke that stimulates arousal. It has be shown that people that laugh more and are exposed to more jokes actually have a faster reaction time and a higher mental functioning ability (to some degree). So keep laughing !!

slapstick comedy?

Actually, that is a really good question. I can make all kinds of guesses, but I've never seen any explanation of eye-watering-can't-catch-my-breath-my-ribs-hurt laughing as a reaction to an auditory or visual stimulus.
