Me Too!!? I lived about an hour away from an Amish community for about eight years and we always enjoyed going over there to shop for material and chocolate!! Beautiful quilts. I made a very simple 12" by 12" square quilt for me & my husband's bed when I was about 26 and it was just calico material, a piece of polyester quilt like stuff and a bed sheet I had. I sewed it together and tied each corner with a knot of yarn ( we were so poor) and I had that quilt as an extra blanket from the time my son was 3 till he left for college with it at 18 and had it till he was at least 21! He loved that quilt so much from the time he was 3 to at least 25!! lol! What a great memory...it was so simple and cheap and it lasted so long!!He said he liked it because it was warm, but he is somewhat sentamental and it was seriously falling apart last time I saw it!. Ya know I have to ask him if he still has it? This subject reminds me of the movie, " Making of An American Quilt"? Did you ever see that movie...it's good. Thanks for the walk down memerie lane!

Yes but it wasn't elegant. I was about 10 and made a patchwork quilt from discarded pieces of fabric. I used my grandmother's treadle sewing machine. After the squares were sewn together instead of doing fancy stitching I used a needle and yarn and made a knot in the middle of each square to hold the batting and back on.
I was sure proud of making a quilt.

I would go with Grandma weekly to her church quilting group and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to make my own.

In the winter, grandma would set her treadle machine in front of the fireplace and I would sit on the floor in front watching her feet work the treadle and listening to her singing old gospel songs. But there was a song about sweet William that I never understood. It had a haunting melody.

No, but I'd like to learn. My daughter quilts but smaller things like for a baby or a wall hanging. Quilting bee would be fun.

I have made a lot of home made quilts. I have tacked them and also hand quilted them. My great grandma did this for years. She taught all of her kids how to do it. It has passed on down threw all the generations. I still make them to this day. Just not as often as I use to. I have even made them and then given them away as gifts. I use to sell them, but most folks now days would rather go to Wal-Mart and such to buy a king or queen size for $35 to $40. I sure can't make them for that at all. I can't even buy the material that goes in it that cheap.

I've never made them, but the older members in my family did/do. I have one a cousin made me on my bed now. I've always wanted to learn to quilt, a quilting bee would be fun. I've replaced all our blankets with quilts I've bought.

My sister does. She belongs to a club and takes lesson on "new" patterns twice a month. I think quilt making would drive me crazy. crazier.... Her group has great fun and gossips/shares the news.

Our grandmothers quilted; but our mom was more athletic. Her hobbies were softball and swimming. She water skied until she was about 60 years old. My dad got skin cancer and sold the boat. I get to stiff sitting around... I like some action. I guess I take after my mom.

Yes, only once. My Mom had started a quilt, before she died. Two days after her burial, I got that quilt out and finished it for her! Last one I will ever do too!

That will be one thing I do if I can ever retire. I did make a cross stitch top for one but never had it quilted.

Yes... I made them out of our old Levi's... mainly for the sporting events my family members were involved in. I even embroidered our name on them... I made matching cushions to go with...Just this year I took one of them up to my son, he was so surprised and happy to see it, all the memories!

Grandmother always took part in the quilting bee's... they were wonderful... all the ladies talking quietly about life...
