There are so many out there. Yeah, AVG Free worked great, (for a year) but it is a trail thing I guess and it won't allow me to uninstall AVG. So for a FREE download it does work on anti virus and such. But now I get pop-ups saying "Installation error" like 5 times everytime I turn my computer on. I tried Spybot, the same AVG message wont go away. Web root, doesn't work either. I bought $84 McAfee 5-in-1, the AVG still pops up. So beware of FREE anti virus downloads. Apparently even purchased anti virus/spyware won't get rid of AVG FREE. Additional note: I read "Classic" responce about SUPERantispyware and am down loading it now to see if it can help me out. I will let you know. 36 minutes and counting..... Problem still there! Reboot effort made no changes. I would NOT use SUPERantispyware!

Install a good 'Anti-Virus' program...
AVAST 4 Home Edition Antivirus
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-...
Not all antivirus tools are the same; if you find that the one you use isn't working to your satisfaction, you should do some research and try an alternative.
Install a good 'Anti-Spyware' program...
Ad-Aware, Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware are the programs I currently use to eliminate popups, spyware, and adware from my computer. They are well-written, and do not add popups or ads themselves.
SuperAntiSpyware (free)

Ad-Aware (free)
SpyBot S&D (free)

To be blunt, all the protection in the world won't save you from yourself.
Don't open attachments that you aren't positive are ok.
Don't fall for phishing scams.
Don't click on links in email that you aren't positive are safe.
Don't install "free" software without checking it out first - many "free" packages are free because they come loaded with spyware, adware and worse.

Both AVG (Grisoft) and Avast are free AV programs.
Speaking from experience out of the two I prefer Avast.
You can always look up a comparison online if you can't decide.
While AV shopping, you also might want to look into Comodo or ZoneAlarm for a firewall. ;)

Hey, the other suggestions for anti-virus and anti-spyware are good so far. If you're really cautious have browser security too. Sandbox programs are increasingly popular. These act like a stunt double for your browser, so any phishing, keylogging, spyware, sketchy downloads, etc. affect the sandbox, not your actual computer. I'm working with one of these programs called ZoneAlarm ForceField and we'd like to invite you to try out our free beta, which you can download at www.zonealarm.com/forcefield. Regardless of whether you choose to try out ForceField or not, I hope you find a security solution that works for you! ~Lauren
