I personally can't stand it when anyone leaves. He was one our home grown racer doing a decent job in an open wheel car. I guess I don't understand why they didn't make him a better offer or something to try and keep him there.
I also hate to see them go to the NA$CAR series no matter which one because the majority of the new fans will bash them for coming there and then rag on them because they aren't winning the first time out or if they are in a wreck oh boy.
Anyway I don't like it. NA$CAR doesn't deserve a good driver like him or any other open wheel driver.

OK ... I have a different perspective than most of you. I've been an open-wheel fan for over 25 years. Here's my 2-cents.

Sam Hornish grew up in open-wheels in Carting. He's won multiple championships in the IRL. In '06, he achieved immortality ... an Indy 500 victory. To be honest, he's absolutely correct - he has achieved as much as he can for *American* open-wheel racing. He has nothing left to gain, and was ready for the next challenge.

The only other American challenge out there for four wheels is either the ALMS series or NASCAR. There's much more money in NASCAR, there are more races, there are more fans, there are more sponsors with money. Plus - he already works for a NASCAR owner (Penske). It all fits - it really does.

Now, do I see him being successful in NASCAR. Knowing Sam, he won't stop until he is. He is close to being an "Iceman" as you'll find behind a steering wheel ... cold, methodical. He was in open-wheels, he will be in NASCAR.

So ... yes, I am a little bummed with his departure to NASCAR, but I can see where he's coming from with no future challenges ahead. Now - if IRL and CCWS were to have merged, I could have seen him stay a few more seasons, but still, I think it was inevitable for him to "try something different."

However - I will say this and you can put me on record here - I believe wholeheartedly we have *not* seen Sam Hornish Jr. drive his last Indy 500. I can't say that about Franchitti, Montoya, or Villeneuve, unfortunately, but you never know. Best wishes, Sammy!

I have been an open wheel race fan for over 25 years myself. But the IRL (as well as champ car) will keep losing drivers if they do NOT get together and make 1 series out of it. At first I loved the IRL concept (1 of the few who did). But its time to get the 2 series together again but Tony George just will NOT let that happen.
Until we have 1 series and more races (at least 25 drivers for a race and 25 races) they will keep losing drivers. Next year it will be Helio and a few others leave.

It's good for Sam Hornish Jr. He wouldn't make it to F1 so he goes to where the money is, NAPCAR.

Dario can't go to F1, he's too old and he hasn't raced on a lot of road course since he went to the IRL. Too many left hand turns...

I am bummed. He 's a lot of fun to watch. I liked Dario too. The two people left at the IRL that I really like are Helio and Dan. Hopefully Dan doesn't leave, but I've heard the rumors.

I love the IRL, but they may be in some trouble with these bigger names selling out!

Have a great one.

It really sucks! Dario has already left and now Sam. Can't blame them. They will make a lot more money in Nascar than in Indy. Marketing for Indy needs to be better. Oh well! It SUCKS!

This clown hasn't qualified for one Cup event yet and now they are going to use Kurt Busch's points next year to get him in the show. If you can't qualify, stay HOME! Of all the drivers making the switch, it looks like Hornish is struggling the most. Hope it's all worth it when you're sitting at home more than you're racing next year, Sam.

CART AND IRL will keep loosing the best drivers, if they don't get together! I would love to see the Fords vs the Hondas at INDY...
Sam will do good.. wherever he goes and may even come back if they get together

It's good for other drivers because he was basically the competition. Dario left for NASCAR, which is the stupidest move ever!!!!!! he should of gone to F1!!!!! Why did he go down to NASCAR rather than up to F1?????!!!!!!! Indy is losing all of their good drivers!!!! Those replacments better be good!!!!

Danica will win her first race since she will be the only car on the track.
