It depends on how you define 1. Generally, 1+1=2. But, that assumes that both of the 1s mentioned in your question are equal. I assume that you understand basic mathmatics. So, your question must be aluding to an equation beyond mathmatical reasoning.
For example: 1 man + 1 woman does not equal 2. It may equal 2 humans. But, it also may equal 3 (a result of procreation). Or, it simply equals 1 man and 1 woman, both of which separate and unique.

If you're talking logically in an additional form it's 2 , in a consecutive form it's 11 ... Now in other terms such as marriage , it equals 3 ( one man , one woman then the child of the union ) , etc
