I had it diagnosed at a local auto parts store and the printout said the system is too lean. Is there a way to adjust it or a way to program the computer without taking it to the dealer? Also it idles VERY rough. What can I do?

the code that indicates a "too lean" condition is set when the computer is no longer able to adjust for the lean condition by holding the fuel injectors open for longer injector pulses that add more fuel. Once the computer's self-adjusting capacity is exceeded the code is set.

The code indicates that unmetered air is entering the engine. The most likely cause is that a vacuum hose has come off and you have a large vacuum leak in the engine. That would cause your rough idle. So the first thing to do is to look around at all of the black vacuum lines to see if any are disconnected or split.

The second possibility is an Exhaust Gas Recircualtion Valve that is hung open. That would similarly induce a huge amount of air that bypasses the throttle plates r into the engine. The EGR failure is probably the most likely cause as they get jammed with carbon and can't close. Usually if the EGR is bad the idle will be very rough but the engine will smooth out if you raise the engien speed to over 2000 rpm.

The third possibility is a leaking intake manifold gasket that would again cause the engine to suck in air that does not go through the metering system. You can usually test for a leaking intake gasket by spraying a water mist or a carburetor cleaner on the intake manifolds were they meet the cylinder heads. If the engine smooths out then the gasket is bad. Be careful if you use carburetor cleaner because if you have a split or disconnected hose and you spray the carb cleaner around it could get sucked in and enrich the mixture to give you a 'false positive' test on the intake gasket.

If none of that makes sense, take it to a technician and have them diagnose it. From what you say, the problem is not with the computer; its doing its job in monitoring the system. There is a mechanical problem with the engine. There is also the chance that the fuel injectors are plugged with contaminated fuel but that's a long shot.

hope that helps

You cant adjust it or the computer. You can take to a professional shop or a dealer. It will cost some money for the proper diagnostics. Today computer systems are to complex to diagnois without a scan tool and a code reader from a parts store just doesnot give anyone enough information to pin point the problem. It could be a O2 Sensor or the catalytic converter but is something to do with the fuel and exhaust system

verify engine elementary is a nuisance. I absolutely have (relatives and agency blended) 9 automobiles on the line, and on the instantaneous 6 of them have verify engine elementary gleaming away. It seems that the most elementary illness signaled through that dang elementary is a illness contained in the verify engine elementary circuit. i can turn it off in diverse of the GM automobiles through eliminating the negative battery cable, waiting 2 minutes and hooking the negative cable up again. 2 snags. First is then I absolutely ought to re-set the clock, the radio, the A/C and all. second snag is, per week or 2 later dang elementary is again on. So what I do is keep an eye fixed on the oil and coolant degrees, watch the temperature and oil pressure, and ignore concerning the elementary. different issues that ought to set that elementary off (reckoning on make and style of vehicle) are oil change period, oxygen sensor, mass airflow sensor, dirty or constrained air clear out and such issues as that, yet when your undertaking is fairly properly maintained i ought to nonetheless suspect the purely challenge is that double danged elementary. between issues it isn't stressed into are 2 needed ones. it isn't rigged to warn of guidance issues like low playstation fluid factor. it isn't rigged to grant any training about your braking device.
