The rural areas in South Africa are battling to get connected and the only option available to them at this stage is the old antiquated dial up system using a telephone line, or via satellite.

South Africa is far behind the standards of the other technology rich countries and we are seriously lacking in internet technology. The internet is still very new to South Africa and has only just begun to catch on.

I actually live in rural SA. In the Northern Cape Karoo area to be more precise. I'm using GPRS/EDGE right now!
3G is available in some places.
Vodacom's service and coverage is by far the best.
So go to a Vodashop before you leave the city and get yourself a "Data Bundle". You can use a 3G phone through a Bluetooth connection, but either a PC-Card or USB "Cellular (3G) Modem" is a lot easier to setup.
Take your laptop with you to the Vodashop and don't leave until it is fully setup and definitely works!
