Need to move a file bigger than a floppy can handle from an old Windows 98 PC. No CD burner, no ethernet port. Not connected to internet.

This is just a dumb machine we keep the companuy books on, and did not want that machine hooked to the internet where it could be hacked.

Tried a USB Thumb drive, but it did not work. The OS was too old.

Looking to do this for zero cost. Any ideas?

I like the idea of zipping the file. You can copy pkzip.exe (the original zip program, about 42K in size) into the folder with the file you want to move. To zip the file, use DOS to path to the folder and type "pkzip newfile.zip . Unless your dataset is really big, that should get it small enough for a diskette. Once you get the zipped file onto a diskette, use an unzip program, e.g. pkunzip.exe, to expand it.

If that doesn't work, uh, how's your programming skills? Write a small program to break the file into diskette sized pieces, then write each piece to a separate diskette. Then piece them together on the other machine.

You could take the drive out of the win98 computer. Assuming it's an IDE drive which most drives were back in the day. You can add it as a primary or slave drive to another computer with a more current operating system. Then transfer the files that way.
