Xanthippe was said to be very much younger than Socrates, and was the mother of his 3 children, Lamprocles, Sophroniscus (named for Socrates' father), and Menexenus. She was said to be ill tempered. Socrates did not bring home money, simply debated about poverty in the markets instead of bring home food.

Socrates was a philosopher... and women are so predictably easy to understand. What would have been the point, right? Im sure he had bigger fish to fry in his world...

Tom P is sort of right. Women may not have been regarded very highly in 1900, before womens rights movement... but we are talking long time ago, here. In Socrates' time, before the dark ages and Christianity came along, in the civilized, advanced empire he lived in... far after the pre-imperial world ended... women were not the garbage they were two centuries ago. They did have a bit more power and respect. The society that Socrates lived in was more morally ethical and concerned with equality, rights, and justice than you may think.

Why do we know so little about Margaret Thatcher's husband (compared to Margaret)? Becuase she is the famous prime minister, not him.
