Squatters are illegal settlers using other people's property to live on. There is no 'their land' although they might try to discouraged other people from using the land. More likely traps were used to rid themselves of the rabbits so they could grow crops or raise cattle.

Land lords used 'man traps' to discourage squatters from settling in on their property.

Man traps were: bear traps meant for people; small pits with spikes; and wire snares, plus big mean dogs.

NO RABBIT TRAPS THAT I AM AWARE OF WOULD DISCOURAGE ANYONE THEY WERE USED TO TRAP RABBITS FOR FOOD. RABBIT PROPERLY PREPARED IS DELICIOUS.
