I think an interesting conflict is over immigration from Mexico into the southwest US. People forget that the US waged a war against Mexico in the 1840's for control of that area, and the US annexed the territory after the war. Many historians think that the Mexican-American War was instigated by the US as part of our Manifest Destiny philosophy--expand to the west coast at all costs. I think that enters into the conversation as many Mexicans who were residing in the area that is now Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico were forced further south after the annexation.

It's not that there is no American History or that BRITISH history is older it's just that American history is not documented. It is more than likely that humans were living on America 100s of years before they living in Britain because of the climate. It really depends on you point of view......would you prefer to look into more depth at British history or would you like to try and discover American History. Of course there is still American History recorded, such as the founding of the land, the independence war (which you will celebrate on the 4th July) and the civil wars and maybe even the most important yet the American Foreign Policy. I wouldn't say we are expected to know anything as much you are, for example i think near enough everyone knows about what the 4th July marks in America, but i think this may be because Americans are much more Patriotic. However when saying that we celebrate Bonfire Night, which marks the night that Guy Fawkes was executed after trying to kill the King (Charles I). In lower years of High School we study things such as the Black Plague, The Great London Fire and the Tudors. Then when getting into our fourth year of high school we study more of Wold War I and World War II. We still study American History, for example we did about the assignation of Kennedy.

How about the American civil war? I know you said you wanted a topic that no one else would think of, but hear me out. You can take a different stance on the topic. I challenge you to find the real underlying causes of the civil war. The version you and your classmate have been taught in school isn't the whole truth. I'll bet that you and your classmates think the civil war was fought to free slaves. NOT TRUE!
I think if you will write your paper from the south's point of view, and discover the real causes of the American civil war you will have not only a topic no one else would think of, but a topic that most people don't even know exists.
I can recommend a few books to help in your studies. The South Was Right by James and Walter Kennedy. The history of the Southern Confederacy by William C. Davis.
I wish you the best of luck, and feel free to ask any more questions. If you should decide to take this advice I would love to know how it turns out. Please let me know.

I think US - Cuba relations would be a good topic. For years the United States has cut off all contact with Cuba (because of dictator Fidel Castro). As a result American citizens cannot fly to Cuba, and Cuban citizens are not allowed in the United States (although there are some exceptions). If the conflict had never happened, US airlines, hotel & resort companies and American busines' would make millions each year from American tourists visiting Cuba. Its a cabirrean island with some amazing beaches. Hilton and Marriott would love to have resorts there, but as a result of the conflict they cannot operate there.

There are some interesting aspects of American history.
1. G.I. Bill. Congress voted to give American soldiers $$$ to go to college in return for their service in World War II. This brought thousands of young men (mostly) to colleges and universities who would not have gone had the $$ not been there.
2. Lynchings. This is a dark part of American history. Lynchings were done all over the country, but there were probably greater numbers in the south. Young black men were subjugated to lynchings. The Civil Rights Movement had a great part in ending these terrible acts.
3. The internment of Japanese Americans in concentration camps during World War II. This was done by FDR. Many people feared that Japanese Americans would side with Japan during the war. Thousands lost their homes, businesses, etc. to be sent to the interior of the U.S.
Hope these ideas help.

Hmmm, let's see-
You could do something on immigration. There were several 'waves' of immigration- some in the early 1800s (the Irish were in that wave) and one at the end of the 1800s (eastern Europeans came in on that wave) and the early 1900s (some of the Asian immigrants came in on that wave).
The influx of immigrants had a great impact on American life and culture. You could pick any immigrant group and write about how their experiences affected American life.

I suppose it also needs to be something that is relatively small so you can complete the project without writing a large book or two.
How about the Ft. Mims massacre in AL.
The capture of George Washington at Ft. Necessity.
The Whiskey Rebellion?
The death of General Braddock?
The battle of Balls Ford? Civil War fiasco.
The death of Meriwether Lewis, suicide or murder? Of Lewis and Clark fame.

Battle of Blair Mountain is really interesting, and a lot of people don't know anything about it. It involved an armed group of coal miners (about 10,000) back in 1920. This had longstanding effects, which continue today, on US labor policy and the coal industry itself.
