in innovating alternative fuels and have not been dependant on oil for over 10 years if it isn't for the fact that oil companies run our country and our wonderful politicians let them? Shouldn't we be forerunners in innovation, we used to be, it's like we are in a 3rd world country and don't know any better. Wake up!

How much oil does Brazil need to consume?

How much oil does the US need to consume?

There is your answer. Brazil's GDP is much, much lower then the US so low BTU output fuels mated with other sources is enough for their economy now. It will not be later. There is not enough area and plants do not grow fast enough to rely on ethanol as a primary fuel. The only energy that is in abundance without the side effects of burning carbon based fuels is solar energy. If 1/3 of Arizona were covered in solar panels with 20% conversion efficiency enough electricity would be generated to meet all of the US's needs. That is only 3% of the total square area of the US. This is where we should be heading.

It has a lot more to do with demographics than anything else.

Brazil, while having a large population (about half of ours), does not even come close to the US in terms of fuel production. We use far, far more fuel than they will on a per capita basis.

Further, we are not able to produce sugar here, nor does the government allow it to be imported on any real basis. Ethanol made from sugar is much more efficient and cheaper than using corn. It is also much smarter than using corn.

If the US government got out of the way, ethanol might be successfully imported. Making it here, however, is just silly.

What makes you think the oil companies run america ??

Trial lawyers donate 6 times more money to politicians than the oil industry does.

Trial lawyers are the largest source of campaign money in america.

In 2006 congressional election's, they donated over 120 million dollars, compared to 20 million by the oil companies.

You need to stop reading the hype, and actually go look at what industries are actually paying the money.

That's because we have become a nation of I want the government to solve all my problems and do all my thinking. When we do get some one who thinks for him/her self every one turns against them because they don't share their wealth with the rest of us. It isn't just the oil companies who control the politicians GE(General Electric) spends more money on lobbyist than all the oil companies put to-gather and they are not the only one . While we blame the oil companies for all our problems we are getting it from corporations that we never thought of.

Ask the EPA why they won't let us test drill, so we can rely on our own resources instead of the Middle East. The Democratic EPA prevents alternatives.
