Most bacteria are heterotrophic, meaning they require complex organic matter, as opposed to autotrophic bacteria, which can synthesize their own food.

Heterotrophic bacteria are found everywhere. They are characterized by the fact that they do not photosynthesis and they consume autotrophic bacteria by means of endocytosis. This i am pretty sure of, but there are a lot of great places you can go to for the answers such as berkely college online
