I was actually watching a great show on the history channel about the Egyptians the other day and they said that till this day we actually use many of there ideas for architecture. They had showed architects that just finished building the world's tallest bridge and they used there techniques because they are still very relevant today.

The Egyptians are most famous for being one of the first civilizations in the world (proceeded, possibly, only by the Mesopotamians).

Egypt became a state around 3000 BC under the first Pharaoh Narmer who unified Upper (Southern) and Lower (Norther) Egypt who had some culture distinctions, although it should be noted that Egypt had human settlements and what could be considered civilization as early as 5000 BC. Being one of the first civilizations, the Ancient Egyptians were many of the original thinkers and practitioners in a variety of fields including religion, politics, art, writing, architecture and many others. It should be said that all of those fields no doubt had earlier roots, but with the advent of civilizations they took on new proportions and levels of progress far beyond what had been seen before. Unfortunately most of their writings have been destroyed, but many of their famous monuments remain largely in tact. Egyptologists have done a good job of reconstructing their history and culture as best they can (no small task).

The Ancient Egyptian's history is broken up into three main periods: Old, Middle and New with intermediate periods of chaos often referred to as dark ages. Egypt's fortunes rose and fell at different periods but they were always a major power to contend with. Most of their wars were either civil wars (inside factions fighting each other) and wars for control of Palestine first against the Palestinians themselves, later against the Hittites, Murians and Assyrians. They communicated and interacted with other nearby powers, the Mesopotamians, Arabs, Ethiopians, Palestinians, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Minoans, Greeks (Mycenians) and others.

In the early 7th century BC the Egyptians were conquered by the Assyrians. Since that time the Egyptians have almost continually been ruled by foreigners until they gained independence from the British in 1922. Consequently the Egyptians also declined in power and influence although its ancient monuments have continued to attract and astound foreigners and natives alike.

The Egyptians were ruled intermittently by the Assyrians until the 6th century BC when they were conquered by the Persians, who intermittently ruled them until the Greeks under Alexander the Great conquered the Persian empire in the 4th century BC. Alexander's general Ptolemy ruled Egypt until Julius Caesar annexed it for Rome in the 1st century BC. The Egyptians were ruled by the Romans for 600 years until they were conquered by Muslim armies from the Arabic peninsula where the Islamic religion had just been founded.

Egypt had become a Christian nation during it's occupation by the Romans. After the Muslims conquered Egypt in the 7th century AD, Egypt quickly transitioned into a Muslim nation, a characteristic which still shapes Egypt today.

Egypt continued to be ruled by various Muslim dynasties and factions until the late 18th century when they were invaded and briefly ruled by the French under Napoleon. Afterwards control reverted to the Muslim Turks until 1882 when England seized control of their government. Egypt gained independence in 1922 shortly after World War 1. Since that time it has made attempt to modernize but struggles with poverty and has been drawn into conflict in the Middle East.
