Visa , MasterCard and, to a lesser extent, American Express are widely accepted throughout Manila and other major cities, and also in popular tourist destinations such as Boracay. You can withdraw cash from 24-hr ATMs (in the Visa, Plus, Mastercard and Cirrus networks) in all cities and even many smaller towns. Most banks will advance cash against cards (generally Visa and MasterCard) for a commission. If you use credit cards to pay for airline tickets and hotels, there is sometimes an extra charge of around 2.5 percent. <*-*>

I hope by stopping payment on your old credit card you didn't stop the check. That is not the appropriate way to go. You should have notified your bank immediately when you noticed the card was gone, even if it was for only 15 minutes. That is the ONLY way you can guarantee you're protected 100%. If you haven't already called the bank, do it NOW. Under these circumstances they might just take care of you on that charge. Either way you need a new account, which it sounds like you've already done since you're reffering to the OLD credit card. Unfortunately, the banks don't care who used your card. I know that sounds extremely strange but it's true. It happened to us in the tune of $4000+ while on vacation. Most of it was for cell phone bills, which according to the bank is the biggest source of this kind of theft. When we returned home there was a message on our voice mail indicating a mail order company wanted verification of an order we placed. Obviously, this wasn't our order but was placed by the person who stole our information. We contacted the bank and told them we knew the person was in Florida and could get the information for them. It wouldn't apply to the on-line order since it was never shipped but could help them find the people who used our number to pay all those cell phone bills. Would you believe they didn't care? They told us it's the merchants who lose, not them. In our case it was several cell phone providers.

Visa, MasterCard has been honored here in the Philippines for the longest time now. Yes, you will be able to use it. Inform your Card issuer thou that you plan to use the card in the Philippines so they can make the necessary notifications in their departments. They might just block it outright and think someone stole your card if you don't do so. Don't want you stuck in a country with out that card.

Yes, but with all the scrupulous activities happening even at respectable restaurants, banks and shops in the Philippines, I'd rather have my card as a last resort. I'd stay paying with paper during my visits.
