I have 7 Italian Cypress trees, all planted at the same time. The taller ones have one main trunk but the shorter have several main trunks(if I can can them that) and each trunk seems to be wanting the top position. My question is, Can I prune the lower or weaker looking trunks so that most of the growth is concentrated on just one trunk? The trees are approx. 10' to 12' tall. planted 4 years ago at 3 feet in height.

Hi:
You can prune back the lower trunks but always cut the trunk or any branch at an angle. After you have pruned, water good and add some six month nitrogen slow release fertilizer to the Cypress. This is help the trees and get the growth where you want. You can fertilize in spring and fall.

I hope this has helped some and take a look at my proper pruning page on my website to get some more information. I will also direct you to my site map so you can browse through and see if you can find any other information for your landscaping needs. Have a great day!

That sounds doable. They will fill back in. You may want to do just a couple of the extra 'trunks' at a time so the tree won't get such a shock. General rule is not take off more than a third of a tree's leaf are/branches at one season.
