Currently, U.S. News & World Report ranks NYU #4 in the country and Columbia #5. Given the margin of error involved in these rankings, I would say that you can't go wrong with either one!

Well, others have stated the US News ranks. Other ranking systems rank them similarly. To help decide between the two, here are some things you may want to consider:
Columbia is an Ivy League school but it's tuition is slightly more expensive. It seems to be the case that Columbia is better if you'd like to concentrate highly on a certain area. NYU is great if you'd like to get a general purpose JD. From what I've read and heard, the alumni network from Columbia seems to be a little better than NYU's. The alumni network is probably equally as important as the level of education.

This year, NYU was ranked above Columbia in the USNews law school rankings for the first time. Historically, Columbia has been considered better, and that continues to be true in the minds of employers (which is what you should care about).

Barring some scholarship money or strong personal feelings, you should go to Columbia.

I understand your question and I do think now a days the ranking of the schools plays a big role on which to select. I believe Columbia University is better anyway you look at it. People respect you with a degree from Columbia mainly because its a school that's very hard to get into. But of course it your take. I hope you select what is best for you.

Good Luck!

They are virtually identical in quality. US News ranks NYU as the number four law school -- and Columbia as the number five law school.

Columbia ranks higher both in the College (undergraduate) and in the law school (Columbia is usually in the top 3-4 nationwide).

There are plenty of great non-Ivy league private and public schools. Michigan State, UCLA, Univ. of Wis, Rice U, Carnegie Mellon, Wash U, The fact is that there are a lot of students applying to college every year. And too many people put their hopes into those few schools, you have to broaden your search. Unless you have a lot of money, really good connections, luck, or some combination of all three, then as an average student with avg community service, SAT and extra-curriculars, then you prob. won't be going to Harvard. But there are so many other options, just because you don't have that one path, doesn't mean there aren't other options. Of all the college-educated people in this country, only a small percentage of them are Ivy-league alums. Plus, if you do well for undergrad, you may be able to go to the Ivy or top ranked school for graduate school? There are many "up-and-coming" schools like Davidson, Baylor, Macalester, Claremont, Pomona, Miami U, U. Maryland, don't be narrow in your college search.
