I'm working on my history degree, but you still have to have 2 sciences, so I picked astronomy, got a calculator that seems not to have a 1/x key, so I'm trying to figure out what it does, so I can duplicate the effect.

you could call it the reciprocal key. If you enter the number 5 and press that key, you get 1/5, or .2

If you have some number, say 5, you enter 5, hit the 1/x key and the calculator calculates 1 divided by the number, in this case the answer is 1/5 =0.200

I don't know of any other name for the key ...

Reciprocal or Multiplicative Inverse.

To duplicate this function on a calculator without the key, just start by keying in: 1 ÷ then type in the number and then the equals key.

It turns your number upside down.
For instance if you enter 2 and hit 1/x you get 0.5 = 1/2.
It's called the reciprocal key.
