It's a matter of opinion but here's mine.

During the depression 1929-1932 while Hoover was President there were several marches on DC etc and there was a bgrowing Communist Party and Union agitation. The Feds overreacted and dispersed tent cities with armed forces lead by McCarthur (later hero Pacific theatre WW2)
This abrogation of constitutional rights is my number 1.

Number 2 the Civil War but more specifically the waiver of habeus Corpus by Lincoln after the NY March protest riots.

Third- I agree today's Patriot act

Now is the most dangerous time in our history. Too many people vote against freedom to control some behavior they do not like. It is always a mistake to vote freedom away!
