My Grandma would suggest catnip tea.

St. John's Wort, in theory, may have effects similar to SSRI's (Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, etc.), so would be similar to what you were on but milder.

Valerian and melatonin are supposed to help with sleep, but valerian doesn't work for me and melatonin can cause depression in some people.

GABA is the neurotransmitter enhanced by Valium and Xanax, but I don't know if GABA supplements are natural or how well they get into the brain from the stomach.

Exercises and self-hypnosis (or similar things like progressive relaxation, meditation, yoga, chi kung, or tai chi) are very helpful -- and don't forget to include some non-stressful, relaxed time for yourself.

There are a number of herbs and supplements that have been shown to help with stress and anxiety. St John's Wort, Kava Kava and Lithium Orotate just to name a few. I found thru personal experience that not all supplements work for all people. I would try also adding a good multi-vitamin supplement to your regimen. The one that I use is called Intramax, this multi-vitamin is an 100% organic vitamin and mineral supplement. The next thing that you should look into is a high quality B complex as well. I would also look into a good cleansing program. I know that this probably sounds strange. However, if you are suffering from stress and anxiety, the body most likely is very toxic. Which means that your liver is not able to filter all your toxins.

St John's Wort and Valerian can effectively help but it should be better to try Passionflower and Chamomile. A combination of these two natural herbs are currently used to decrease stress and anxiety. They usually help peope to get control of themself in different situations.
However if you do know your source of anxiety it is obviously urgent to look for a solution inside instead of trying lots of medecine.
A positive attitude, meditation and relaxation could be the best natural medecine for anxiety.

Valerian is a pretty good choice for short term use.

Long term, you should look at eliminating caffeine/nicotine, and some sort of stress-reduction techniques, like yoga or meditation. These are techniques that have been used successfully for thousands of years. Worth giving them a try.

You could also try to eliminate the source of the anxiety. There usually *is* a source.

I have had awesome results with people using 5-HTP, which is the precursor for seratonin in your brain. Usually 300 mg daily will do the trick. I had a client that was anxious to the point of not leaving the house, and now she's fine. Also, as mentioned, you should find out the source of the anxiety. Flower essences can be incredibly effective at helping you identify and eliminate sources of anxiety.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

The most popular things for general stress and relaxation are St. John's Wort, SAMe, some B-Vitamins, GABA, Ashwagandha, and L-Theanine.
