They should contend but they will have to fight off both the Mets and the Braves once again.

Sure. They had devastating injuries to cope with all season and won. With some luck on their side health wise, I don't see why not. They will need to acquire a solid, #3 type starter, and they gave up a good young talent in Bourn to get Lidge. If they don't re-sign Rowand, then the outfield looks like Burrell, Vic, and Werth. Which Burrell will show up, and is Werth good enough to hold down RF as a starter? Do you take a chance that Helms will have a comeback year and let him and Dobbs man 3rd again, or do you aggressively pursue something better? After all is said and done, I think the key thing is continuing to improve the staff. One more solid arm in the pen, one more in the rotation, and the Phils are looking pretty good for '08.

I'm as big of a Phils fan as there is. They played well down the stretch yes, but be real - the Mets giftwrapped them the division this year. The team they have as of November 11, 2007 is not good enough to win it again. That could change by March of 2008 but for now, I don't see it happening. Losing Rowand is going to hurt more than people realize. Romero isn't resigned yet and may go elsewhere. 3rd base is a disaster for them. The outfield lacks power. Guys who had huge years last year out of nowhere - like Burrell, Rollins, Romero & Kendrick cannot be counted on for repeat performances in 08. The best idea would be to give Gillick time...the rest of the offseason to make more moves and see where they are in Feb/March and then evaluate.

i think they have a very good shot at it, they still have momentum and the fact that they know they can make it is going to make them want to make it again and get that much further. they'll have initiative and drive and some pitching after the off season. i think the mets have met their match and the phillies are finally on top of their game and their division

oh and ben g, no other team in the league would have been able to stop the rockies, so i would sya your wrong, because whether the rockies had to beat the mets or phillies, they would have beat them

and the red sox still would have won - they easily deserved it

They can, IF the Mets bullpen is as horrible as it was the 2nd half of the season. Sign Mike Lowell or Torii Hunter, that way the Phillies management will be a lock for one of the 8 teams that make the MLB playoffs.

Phillies sign a big name pitcher, and you can forget the Mets, & Braves, Phillies win the penant. Phillies take Lidge as their only signing in the offseason and you can say the Mets will take it. The phillies need a steady third baseman that can hit at least 30 home runs, 100 RBIs, and bat for at least .275 and this would help as well. Once that happens, we have one of the best, if not the best infields in the NL. GO PHILLIES!!!!

They won the division this year but let's not go overboard here. The Phillies will have to contend once again with the Mets and Braves. Let's see what everybody does in the offseason and then we can discuss this.

I do believe so.........Mets are going to probably lose Glavine to the Braves and might possibly have to adjust their infield if they sign A-rod...and even if they don't there might be problems.......it just doesn't look good for them.......

Phillies might lose Rowand (let's pray not) but they are building their pitching staff and if need be, will replace Rowand's spot..........i think it will be tough for them but they will come out better than the Mets.

I personally think the Phils can do it again, in my opinion its not the mets we will have to worry about, its the Braves.

Not me. With trading away Rowand's replacement and getting a washed up Brad Lidge to blow their game for them instead of a different crappy pitcher, they'll finish 2 games out of the Wild Card

Not me...the Mets' players are pissed that they gave it away, I see them coming out of the gate, and running away with it.
Only the people in Philadelphia think the Phils will win.

In another 10-15 years, maybe, unless you believe that whole Doomsday December 21, 2012, thing! Brad Lidge was the nail in the coffin for you guys.
