Right now I'm taking AP Calculus which is the highest math I have ever taken in my life. I'm a senior in High School. I'm the only black female in taking AP calculus at my school. My math teacher makes me feel as though I'm not capable of understanding the work. I try my absolute best, but he sometimes just gives up. For instance I failed a math test and the other girl who he particularly favors failed it too, but he didn't say anything to her just to me and we had the same failing grade. She is an asian girl, but I feel like he thinks she's capable of doing better regardless and not me. I go to tutor twice a week and I'm looking at other resources and everything. I can't get out of this class because then I would be looked at as a failure and a quitter then he'll have the upper hand. I feel so outcasted at times when everyone understands the concept and not me, then when I have a question on a certain probably he makes these gesture like it was so easy and how could I have missed it.

Sounds like your teacher is threatened by you

What is it that's making YOU feel incompetent about your abilities? How are you coming across in attempting to get what you want? It's NOT what is said...but HOW it is said when communicating.

Also, STOP focusing on what other students are doing, saying, perceptions, etc. Like a laser, you need to focus on YOU and the class. Go around to other students, and ask if they want to study as well. Get example questions from alternate sources, etc.

You might ask the teacher in private if he or she has developed an attitude about you?

Hard work and persistance will get you ANYTHING in the world you want...NEVER forget that!

you know?, just forget it ..thinking more about that would make you feel worse, at the end you are not trying to impress him or anything. you don't study because of him but because of you; you want to know. I mean; really WHY do you care at all?, he is just a bad teacher who feels good treating bad people ; so probably teaching is not his vocation after all.

Dont let his gestures retain you from learning..i mean; you know you are smart and it's all that matters at the end YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHOW EVERYONE HOW SMART YOU ARE all that matters is how you feel about YOURSELF at the end, and YOU DON'T HAVE TO JUSTIFY YOUR QUESTIONS come on, you are learning and he is supposse to teach you, so if he acts like ¨come on everybody knows that¨ just ignore him and listen to the answer..

I hope this helps, I wish you good luck with everything and remember that you can always start from scratch :)

MAybe you should talk to him about how you feel. Let him know that you really want to learn this but need him to help you. If this doesn't solve the problem see if there is another teacher teaching the same class. Maybe you could switch.

You have four options the way I see it.
1.) Stay in his class and get through it.
2.) Talk to him out of class, or get your parents to have a conference with him.
3.) If your bad grades continue, you should switch out of his class. If there is another calculus teacher, you should switch to him/her.
4.) If there is not another teacher, and you continue to do bad in that class, or if he continues to make you feel stupid to the point you cannot take it anymore, you should get out of his class.

If it is making a difference in your education then you should take action.

He/She is showing their incompetence by not being able to handle someone whose learning curve is not as rapid as their own 'teaching abilities' .. pity you weren't in my classes (when I was teaching) I found slow learners (and I use the words lightly) were the best challenge I could get from a group, normal and/or fast learners were acceptable as a blotting pad for my input, slow learners challenged my practices as teacher and my self respect as a communicator .. my advice to you, is to persist, maybe, just maybe, your teacher will wake up to his/her responsibilities some time .. and by the way should you eventually succeed and progress beyond their level you can be secure in the knowledge that you are 'better' than they were, since you could learn and they couldn't teach

You don't have to just sit there and take it. Just tell him when he does that, you don't appreciate it and just because it's easier for others is no reason for him to disrespect you! That ought to shut him up! And if it doesn't, tell him you can see him in the principals office if he wants to discuss it further!

Not the sign of a good teacher. Who knows why your teacher is like that, maybe jealousy.
