I was told early on that my placenta is on the upper left hand side of the uterus. When we had a u/s on Monday, she pointed to the blob by the babies head and said that was the placenta. Well, baby is head down now. Does that mean the placenta has moved from the top to the bottom?
I know I should have asked at the time, but didn't really think much of it till later. Just curious... Thanks!

in order for your placenta to move it has to come away from the wall of your uterus then you will have a condition called placenta previa.
if that happens your baby's life line has been compromised and is in serious danger it gets nothing from you anymore and it can die and i don't think that is the case in your situation or your dr would have been notified immediately .
so i think that your placenta has just grown down the side of your stomach so the only thing you would have to worry about is it blocking the cervix and then again your dr would have informed you about that.

so i think you are in the clear if you have any concerns then share them with your dr at the next visit and he should ease your mind.

good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

Nope it can't move really. The placenta is attached to the uterine lining by 2 arteries and 1 vein. If that were to disconnect (and move) the blood supply to your baby would be cut off. It is probably just that your uterus is expanding, making room for your baby - as it expands it drags the implantation site of the placenta downwards.

I should clarify... the placenta is the highly vascularized (lots of blood vessels) area that is made up of both a maternal and fetal portion - blood from the baby comes through the umbilical arteries and goes back to the baby through the umbilical vein... Anyway, it's where all the baby's waste products get filtered out (the baby's blood arrives through the umbilical cord) and the mom passes on nutrients, oxygen, antibodies, and hormones to the baby at the placenta.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I agree with the others, that the placenta is attached and does not move. However, I wouldn't get too worried right now. You may have been mistaken one of the times about how your baby was positioned and where the placenta was, or the tech may have mis-spoke. That seems more likely to me then that your placenta detached and moved. The ultrasound tech would have noticed and would have reacted immediately (probably having your hospitalized) if there was a problem like that.

A detached placenta is a medical emergency and would cause you to bleed. You would definitely know it if your placenta 'moved'...it is attached firmly to the uterine wall by a million tiny capillaries, and veins and arteries. Your baby would be in a lot of trouble if any part of the placenta detached. Always ask your doctor if you have ANY concerns while you are pregnant. They are used to answering them and it will put your mind at ease.

Placentas do move during pregnancy, well not really but as the uterus expands they appear to move. However they get HIGHER in the uterus not lower.

The placenta does move. thats why with women that have placenta previa they just watch it before they do anything in the event that it decides to move off the cervix opening. as long as its not covering the cervical opening the placenta moving isnt going to hurt anything! (and as long as its not peeling!)

The baby can move inside the placenta easily, but the placenta itself is attached to the uterine wall and will not move. It can stretch and appear to move, but it is not moving.

It can GROW into the uterus, filling the entire cavity, but doesn't really move.

If it does move, it can seriously endanger the life of your baby.
