I don't do much electrical repair these days. But, when I do, I do it in the kitchen. We have granite countertops, so I won't burn anything. And, we have a gas range. So, I turn on a burner and stick the tip of the iron into the flame to heat it up real fast.
This might eventually damage the soldering iron. But, who cares? I don't use it much anymore and I don't want to wait around for it to heat up.

what I like to do when waiting for the soldering iron to heat up is clean the immediate work area and prep the surfaces to be soldered by cleaning and fluxing to make sure of a good even flow when the solder is being applied. I also inspect the soldering tip and file or clean it. Tinning the clean tip before soldering also aids in a good solder joint.

Well I don't have a soldering iron, but if we are talking about you, and assuming you've already made tea, maybe you should butter the muffin?

Normally I get distracted and burn something because the iron moves. One time it made a really cool knife like burn in the carpet. My wife loved that!

Don't tell these fine people about soldering, while you'll need that underwater welding torch.
