I know exactly how you feel. Firstly plan to do it in small steps.
One room or area of a room at a time. Write out a list of treats or rewards for yourself. eg reading a book, watching a favourite tv show, having a long chat on the phone.
Put on an album or some form of music you enjoy to listen to as you go. Promise yourself you'll clean/organise for at least 3 or 4 songs.
I know that sounds a ridiculous short amount of time but that is how you begin.
Another way is to set a timer for even 10 or 15 minutes.

Over timer time you will be increasing that and I find that sometimes once I am going I keep going. It is sometimes the starting that is the hardest.

The most important thing is to stay in one place. If items need to be taken to a different room make a pile or even better have a few boxes/ baskets with you as well as a trash can.

Don't try to do it all at once. A little here and a little there makes a big difference and is not too tiring or boring.

Don't forget your reward is waiting.

I also highly recommend Flylady. Just visit the site and read to begin until you feel ready for the emails

I like to put the stereo on and start "cleaning". If things are truly unorganized it's best to start in one room and work you way out that way your not messing up every room in the house. I like to get rid of any useless papers/junk and then file other needed papers. Start sorting everything into bins TOSS, KEEP,DONATE... That should give you a good start. Get everything into bins and then when that is done you can start the task of putting everything away. It just depends how messy/disorganized your space is.. For me routine is key- every morning I wipe down the kitchen/bathroom surfaces w/ antibacterial wipes and then once a week I do a whole surface scrub.. The bathroom/kitchen always look tidy/organized.. In the bedrooms I vacuum everyday and make the beds everyday.. Once a week I change the bedding and dust the furniture. I vacuum the livingroom/diningroom everyday.. I do laundry 2x a week... My house despite having 2 toddlers/husband and a dog.. Is pretty clean/tidy... If you can make it fun and have your friends help you. Spring for pizza or something...

My friend has a small bedroom about 10x15 w/ one double closet.. We managed to bag 6 -30 gal. heavy duty contractor bags full of TRASH ! We also managed to DONATE 6 bags of clothing and get rid of a twin bed set, a dresser, a filing cabinet and recycle over 100 20 oz. plastic pop/soda bottles... We also made $300 selling CD'S/DVD's, VIDEOs and BOOKS. ALL that in one bedroom ! Good luck

Check out some home makeovers either on TV or in Mags to get some inspiration and vision of your ideal "after"...go buy some "cool" cleaning/organizing gadget/product that you'll be excited to put to use...make a game plan and check each off when you are done...blast the music and get it going.
Also...inviting friends over for a movie night or dinner later will motivate you to clean up your place too.

Hope this helps. :)

I do the best cleaning when I am super pissed off at something. My other motivation? My future mom in law is coming over...Also, my cleaning day is always Friday night, so that I know fridays I have to buckle down & do it. Then I have the whole weekend to relax. Other than that cleaning sucks! I wish I could afford a maid! lol

go to yahoo groups and subscribe to the fly lady group for your area...she send out emails throughout the day to say "ok go clean all the papers out of your desk" and crap like that, and all the women on there get the same message so you know hundreds of women are doing it at the same time so ur not alone. it helped my to learn how to clean and now my house is spotless =) well, as spotless as a house can be with 3 kids! LOL

Invite a bunch of friends over for a party. That way you'll want to have clean house so your friends don't think you're a slob and youi'll be inspired to clean the place up.

This may sound childish but I set my oven or microwave timer for 10-15 minute incriments, start a project and stop when the timer goes off, then do it over again. For some reason it helps me to focus on getting the task done. I get distracted really easily. : ) Good luck!

When I have a big organizing project at home I invite my best friend over to help. We blast music and end up laughing the whole time. But beware they may one day call you to return the favor.

Start, one room at a time. Just envision how HOT your place is going to look once its clean, decluttered and you can BREATHE it in...
Remind yourself of this.
Its amazing how the drive to continue comes about when you start to see results.

Invite your friends for dinner next week ... that will force you to clean it up before they come over ... unless you dont care if they see what a slob you are...
