I learned how to use a slide rule even though calculators were more than readily available.
My grandfather used to say how NASA landed on the moon using a slide rule, pen and paper. Today, they have all the computers doing the work for them and they can't get a robot to take a bloody picture without something going wrong.

I used a slide ruler extensively for approximations and rough working while doing my first degree in maths 1969-1972, then in 1974-5 Sinclair had his first programmable calculator, and we thought the world had arrived at our dorrstep. Sleek, black, cost about 30 pounds and it coudl do 12 digit arithmetic - but I never lost the use of the slide rule and mentally i can stil keep rough track with a check out operator at a supermarket or scan a restuarant bill in seconds....

Calculator, because I don't even know what a slide rule is, and I was born in the age of technology. Or so it is called by a certain book. That I haven't read. That I totally made up.

Slide rules give a better feel for the numbers. Calculators are too easy to make an error.

I learned on a slide rule, too. I was in high school when electronic calculators first became available, but they were big, expensive, and could only do basic operationa (add subtract multiply divide). I still have my old slide rule, still remember how to use it, too.

Slide rule..I still have mine. The calculator, once I could afford one, is much more accurate and a heck of a lot faster.
EDIT:
Which brings me to one of my younger co-workers who just asked me what can be measured with a slide rule.....
LOL

i got one too. and was very expensive SR, during that time in the' early 70's, but i still like to use it to keep my estimation to be within accepted %age range of accuracy !
Besides, i do not use much calculator anymore, after my graduation for to me it's a good exercise for the brain and to keep its mathematical activity once a while.
It's like being in God's Holy Words regularly will help us to know more about His love and Lord Jesus Christ's ways being God in the flesh! Amen.
