sanbox69 is SO LYING!! He does give stars out!! 16 to be exact!!
I love the people who said they give the stars out to interesting and thought provoking questions.... and they gave this question a star. Please don't get me wrong.... I like the question, but interesting and thought provoking it is not.

A few reasons really....
1) If it is something that I need to find quickly. Like a recipe or a song title or a youtube video. Something like that...
2) If it is a question that I want to answer but don't have time right at that moment... I can go back to it later and answer.
3) If I find the question interesting or if it is a funny joke that I found that I want to share with someone else.
4) and lastly... if it is a question that I answered and I want to go back and remember to vote for myself when it goes into voting... so I don't forget.
Oh... and sometimes I star one if someone asks us to in their question. However... I usually go back and remove it later on because I don't like my "starred question" folder to be too full....

I generally give stars to people who have an intelligent or interesting question, a question that challenges my perception on controversial issues , or someone who has a question that is unique.

I star the questions that I find unique, the ones I would like to go back to and see other peoples responses to. Sometimes I do it even when I don't answer so I will come back to it, and maybe find a good answer to that one.

If I don't know the answer and its something I would like to know the answer to - then I star it so I can go back and look at the answers the next day

Some people need to learn how to use the WATCHLIST.
Im sick of having to see retarted questions ending up in the
popular sectioin just because your CONTACTS starred
your question.

If it is something that makes me laugh or think differently. If it is something I may have thought about asking but didn't. Also if it hasn't appeared on Y/A 1,000,000 times already!!
