they are chivalrous before they get engaged or say, married.
once the man is assured she belongs to him, bye to chivalry.
however, when they meet high class ladies in formal situations, they act as prescribed in books of etiquette .
they know how to be chivalrous but are too lazy when they dont have to apply them.

I have found it to be quite a big thing with men here in Egypt far more so than in Australia,UK or America.
Women are respected for being women and to balance that we are expected to act in a dignified manner.
I never have a problem getting a seat on the ferry or other public transport I take. When you shop in smaller store there is always a male who will open the door for you and at my supermarket a young boy to carry the groceries to the car.
The men in my family including my husband, all treat women with the greatest courtesy. it appears to come quite natural to them and is almost done automatically.
Even when if I say "No I can do it myself ".When I am moving furniture or loading my car to go somewhere, the men always seem to take over and I just do the directing.
Doors are alway opened for the women, my husband always takes my arm when crossing the street and stands on the side of the oncoming traffic.
When we are all eating a meal together the women are always "helped to sit down". Which means we are offered our seat and they stand at the back of the chair while we sit down.
I like it!

i agree with zoser..
but to tell you some other side of the story, i do some stuff..
like i ALWAYS stop the car to let a woman cross, only if it's not dangerous to do so of course, and i get too many honks for that but i don't really care, drivers are really monsters these days like zoser said..
i also let a woman enter before me if we are standing waiting for an elevator or smthg..
most people, not just me, in public transportation would give their seat to an old citizen or a young lady in a crowded situation..
in short, chivalry originally IS a part of the Egyptian culture but like zoser said, misuse of capitalism and speedy life style, crowdedness, hard times and opression that most people go through lately leads to new emerging bad characteristics, and that's what zoser was trying to conceive

Chivalry is not only opening doors and seat ladies. it is a lot more than this.

So Chivalry in general is big part of the Egyptian culture, yes.

Opening door and seating ladies is not that common, but many men do this.

In Islam men must respect women and vice versa. If people don't do that its due to drifting away from religion, plus the feminist movement made a lot of men lazy to help women, and besides these young men are used to their mother' help with everything, so they don't expect to do the same to women!
Young men who are brought up in a good way tend to respect and help women and others.
Chivalry isn't just opening doors, its respecting women and treating them as they would treat their sisters, mothers and wives.

well, there are some ppl who does and some who doesn't

I've seen it many times when we are traveling by bus,our male colleagues would let a woman/girl sit in his chair
and there are some incidences where a guy opened the door for me...
but it really annoys me,when waiting for a cap...some guys have no problem taking a taxi i waved for,and i can't really yell at him,but at the same time, this happened so the driver told him:''sorry, the lady waved at me first''

so there are different ppl,and it really depends on who his parents raised him,if they brought him up to respect women and to that kinda stuff..he'll do it spontaneously

edit:
why 3 thumbs down?i didn't give any opinions i just stated situations...rabena yeshfy
