Both countries are major world oil producers, have formidable military capabilities and have contributed heavily to the cultures of other countries. Both countries are monotheistic (belief in one God) for the most part.

The two countries have radically different cultures. Iran has a very conservative political and social culture called a theocracy. They believe the U.S. is "the Great Satan" out to destroy their way of life.
