Be sure her paperwork has been processed properly. She should have received an initial response that they were received which establishes the date benefits were applied for.

That paperwork should give a date that they promise to get you a response by. They might not offer benefits yet - but they do need to keep in contact.

If this isn't happening - she (and you) need to find out why.

18 months is the current average SS says it takes - my experience is it is more like 2 years.

It all really depends on the disabilities of the person. Mine only took a few months to get and I was in my mid 40's. My son has been fighting for almost 2 years, we are waiting to see the judge next, and he has gotten a lawyer. I applied, saw the Dr's they sent me to, and was accepted. I don't really have to go through it every 3 years either, they said they know I won't improve, only get worse. Plus they get all the info from the Dr's on my case.

I am sorry to say there is no way outside of maybe calling your congressman or senator for your area, if the need was great enough he might step in for you, otherwise it can take a year or two, I have been waiting now about 6 months and I had a lawyer from the beginning.Good luck!!!

I got mine (SSI) Within 2 months. Mine was a mental disability All I had to do was tell the physchiatrist(sp) I was in the middle of a war in my head with God and Satan. Needless to say I'm now a Paranoid Schizo. But living with that is no ride in the park.

You can't hurry it up. It takes a LONG time and people often get turned down the first time they apply. One to two years is not unusual to wait.

My friend has been waiting for 2 + years and still no answers. I do hope you have an attorney working for your Grandmother - if not GET one - it's almost impossible to get SSD without one these days!

She should probably get a lawyer. Most people are turned down the first time no matter how compelling their proof is.
