There is a trend of lumping together one poster, who occasionally comes off as somewhat haughty, with another poster who is utterly hateful and irrational. Also insisting (with no evidence I can see) that the hateful poster is also another poster. And lumping that hatefulness with one poster who is a cheap shot artist and pseudo-intellectual (but not usually nasty to people) and another who asks very thoughtful, intelligent questions, but shows occasional sanctimony. Why are these women being lumped together?

Would it be any more fair to lump one guy who sends threatening posts to young women and another who advocates rape and sexual violence, with one who merely posts ungrammatical non sequitur, and another who makes fallacious arguments against feminism, but doesn't seem to attack anyone?

Is guilt by association EVER appropriate? And doesn't it ultimately WEAKEN the credibility of the critic, by trivializing the really negative behavior?

Sigy! No, I wasn't referring to you!

Carrie, actually, I was thinking more of posters who post lists of people, "You're just like....", not to the occasional sloppy failure to use "some" or "many", which we ALL do sometimes. You're fine!

Sigy, seriously, I'd never accuse you of being a pseudo-intellectual: you're always eager to learn and to question, which are the makings of a good intellectual. And I don't recall any cheap shots from you either!

let me add: you also needn't be embarrassed. With the flack you've been getting recently, it's understandable you might perceive a criticism where none was aimed at you.

Very good point! I got blasted yesterday (pretty intensely, too) by a couple of people here who were actually reacting to something someone else said in answer to one of my questions. The person's post was unkind. But I was not the one who made the post, nor did I agree with it. And for some reason, I guess it was because I was associated with (by asking the original question) this person, I was the one who took the heat for someone else's answer. Not exactly fair. But oh well. If people can't think for themselves, and differentiate between people, there's something definitely wrong there.

Guilt by association is sometimes appropriate, certainly in a legal sense, however, I agree with the main points you are making. Namely the way in which some posters are being lumped together is ridiculous. And it does weaken the credibility of the critic. Rightly so.

Thank you Gnu...beautifully said (or typed, hehe.)

It seems we have alot of that going on around here, alas, no matter how much we may dislike some of the things that take place in this section, and even speak up on it, each of us is in our right to express our selves.
I might just take a rest on trying to promote my views on this particular matter for a while, as that itself is seemingly imposing my way of thinking unto others, or so I've been told.
Either way, thank you for your enlightening post, I agree and ideally, in my opinion, it would be lovely if people didn't lump posters with one another, but treated them as individuals.

Guilty as charged. And, of course, you're right. But I think I only do it because saying "the men on this forum" is easier than saying "the trollish losers who attack and harass people."

Hey... there's a bomb threat across the street... bomb squad, helicopters, everything. And where am I? STILL AT WORK! Boo!

I really don't appreciate being lumped in with the feminists who are purported to have personally attacked other users. That just isn't my style. I don't think anybody here likes it. As we should treat people as individuals in society, so should we treat them as individuals on this forum.

EDIT TO SIGY: I don't think he meant you.
