Definitely an iMac!
I bought my first Mac 7 years ago. Sold all of my PC's the next day. In the past 7 years I've not had one single system crash. Not a single virus. Not a single piece of spyware/malware. And haven't needed any extraneous piece of software running in the background sucking up system resources to protect me from them. And it's because of the operating system. The operating system is written to be stable and secure. OSX is built on top of Unix which is the same system used to run government and military servers and any corporation that has a lot of data and information that needs to stay safe and secure. They don't mess around with Windows because it's none of the above.
Macs are extremely intuitive and VERY user friendly. Once you get past the learning curve (which is VERY easy to get past) you're all set! It only took me a couple days to get used to the differences in functioning. They're not difficult at all.
Another reason to get an iMac, Apple has the best customer sevice available. In 7 years my PowerMac G4 has had only one problem and it was a hardware failure in the 6th year. They fixed it for me in my local Apple Store no questions asked. And for FREE. This was 3 years after the extended warranty had expired. You will not get that level of service from anyone else in the game.... Trust me, I used to work for one of the biggest players and have family that works for another one.
Macs are a little more money on the front end, but in hindsight I've never had a single PC last me 7 years... I've never had one last me more than 2 years. And my 7 year old system runs the latest version of OSX, MS Office, and Adobe CS3 better and faster than they run on my wife's 1 year old Dell. And that's because OSX is written to optimize system resources and not be a bloated turd.
My other family that works for one of the biggest PC makers just ditched all of the PCs in his home and purchased all new Macs for he and his wife, and then bought their daughter and her husband one because he was tired of constantly having to fix problems with his and everyone elses computers. Says a lot when we don't even believe in the product that we helped make and market.
You'll love a Mac and you will not be disappointed one bit. Buy with confidence.
And don't let anyone tell you that Macs can't do all that PCs can. That's a decade old argument that's no longer relevant.

Ouch. Can I choose none of the above? Why are comparing one of the cheapest PC companies to one of the most expensive? (Yes, a Mac is a PC.)
Personally, I prefer Windows for games and Linux for everything else. Some people prefer Apples. You're best bet is to go to a store with both and try out the different interfaces. Make a rule that you won't buy one that day. Pick the one with which you're the most comfortable.
As far as security and viruses, Macs are only more secure until all the Windows people who don't know what they're doing are using OS X or Linux and don't know what they're doing.
One reason it costs more to get a Mac is that they put a chip inside that is required to run OS X. So, a Mac can run Windows, Linux, or OS X. If you have another PC, unless you really know what you're doing, you can only run Linux or Windows.

depends on what you are going to use it for. The IMac is superior for media. Pictures and movie clip making, etc.
Gaming a pc is a must. though i never liked gateway.

i could wait a year or to get vista... many drivers and classes at the instant are not compatable with it yet... in my view i admire Hp and dell for sort of laptop. Mac is extreme-high quality yet some f the imcompatability and project to enhance could be annoying for the macs.
