Because the original foundations were rubbish. They've had to underpin it to stop it falling over completely.

Actually it is 's' shaped. The bottom was built then left to settle (the original builders knew the ground would shift) then they built the next bit on an angle to straighten it up and left it again then they put the top on. Unfortunately the ground continued to settle and the tower is now listing rather dramatically!

the tower was built on soft foundations, which were softer on one side than on the other so it leaned that way...but now the leaning has almost stopped...hope that helps...oh by the way...people were allowed to climb up to the absolute top of the tower before but now you arent allowed...so that gives you a picture of the problem...

It's called subsidence. Some years ago we parked the car in a car park close to the tower. A man approached us, fully equipped with a ticket machine, and demanded money. Thinking it was for parking we paid. On closer examination of the ticket, we discovered that it was insurance against the tower falling on our car. The car park was free! Full marks for initiative.

It is built on sandstone that's why it leans.
The top of the Tower is 4 metres out of plumb from the base.

In actual fact it is perfectly vertical . The crafty Italians built the rest of the town at a slight angle so that it looks like the Tower is falling over to attract touists.

people think it was because of the soft soil, but it wasnt. the original foundations were rubbish so it leant a little. Then they tried to balance it out but majorly over did it and now here it is!

It leans because they have put in supports to keep it from falling over.
They did not intend it to lean -- so it wasn't built that way. However, after it started leaning, they added on to it -- so the addition took the lean into consideration.
