The virtual image appears on the same side of the lens as the object and you see it by looking through the lens. The real image is on the other side of the lens and you see it on a screen placed at the proper location; it's a projected image. An example of a real image is anything seen with a magnifying glass, and a projected image like a movie is a real image. Note that real images are always inverted; if you look at the movie frames in the projector they are upside-down so we can see an upright image on the screen.
