Carbon (C) has four valence electrons
Hydrogen (H) has one valence electron.
Ethane C2H6 is 'Single' bonds throughout.
Ethene C2H4 has one 'Double' bond between the two carbons.
Ethyne C2H2 has one 'Triple' bond between the two carbons.

If your draw 'Dot & Cross' diagrams to show covalent bonding
Each H /C bond may be shown as H x x C
However, the C/C bond in ethane is C x x C
The C/C bond in ethene is C x x x x C
Finally, the C/C bond in ethyne is C x x x x x x C
Where the 'x' represents an electron.

you add up the valence electrons of each atom to get the total valence of the molecule Carbon has 6x2 would be twelve Hydrogen has 1x4 would be four so C2H4 has 16 valence electrons. follow that for all of them

Well, I know that for certain elements, you can look at the group number to determine valence electrons. I don't know if this helps. I know this works for group A elements.
