Zinger, that's a bunch of crap!

The reason they don't expand to 12 teams is because they don't want a conference championship game? Come on!

For your information they played three teams last year who were ranked #2, so they played plenty of top ranked teams, much higher than Wisconsin!

The conference championship game can also be a positive for a team, Florida would not have made it to the big dance had it not been for their win.

So to make a claim that it somehow makes college football unfair for the teams that do play one is just ridiculous.

Reply:

The question has already been answered correctly multiple times. Conferences with less than 12 teams are not required to play a championship game.

To claim it is some effort by the Big 10 or Pac 10 to uneven the playing field is just plain wrong.

Because NCAA rules state that in order to have a conference championship game the conference must have 12 teams, there are only 11 in the Big 10.
I think it also specifies the 2 division at least format as well.

EDIT: the 12 team rule does not require a championship game, but it allows for one, if they had 12 it is conference choice.... just to clarify some of the later comments

And ND doesnt join big 10 because it would lose money.

Same reason there is none for the PAC-10. You need twelve teams and the last I heard neither conference wants to expand to that level because it would require a conference championship game like the Big-12, ACC and SEC. Why? It's a chance for your top conference team to lose a game which would prevent it from making it to the BCS championship game. For example, Ohio State would have had to play a top ranked team like Wisconsin last year which they didn't have to do. They could have easily lost to Wisconsin which would have meant no Big-10 goes to the dance.
The playing field is not equal in college football. Savvy?

Oh no, I got two negative votes. I must have upset some PAC-10 and Big-10 fans. All I can say is grow up and face the facts.

Okay Mr Z then you tell me why. It is easy to criticize but what is your answer. You certainly did not answer the question. It cannot be money because the SEC makes a bundle on their championship game. So please Mr Z enlighten me with your knowledge, mmmmhhhhh?

Because that's the way the big ten has always done it. They have only added 2 teams in the last 80 years, and with very few exceptions, the OSU/Michgan is the last game of the season for both teams.

Why should the big ten change, because some of the other conferences decided to add a championship?

This year with be the 45th time the Big Ten Championship was decided by the Ohio State/Michigan game. If any other conference in college football had those kind of dynasties, they wouldn't need a championship game either.

Because there are actually 11 teams in the Big 10, they would need to add another team to the conference (maybe Notre Dame?) in order to have 2 divisions. This would cause a conflict, however. If you put OSU and MICH in the same division, they cannot play for the Big 10 championship, thus minimizing the significance of the game. If they are in separate divisions, they won't play each other every year.

with conferences that have a conference championship, they have 2 divisions to divide their teams...the Big Ten is not currently set up like that...but I will tell you something, usually the Big Ten champion is determined by Ohio State or Michigan in most years...whether between each other, or by losing and allowing another team coming in

this year for instance, no matter what happens the Big Ten Champions will be determined by the Ohio State Michigan game...winner is big ten champ

I think the Big Ten has no conference championship game because the use of a championship game is fairly new. The SEC is the only conference with a championship game and they started it only a couple of years ago. I think the SEC championship game has been a big success but that is open for debate.

I think the NCAA requires a 12 team league to qualify for a championship game. Besides, I don't think the Big 10 really cares that much.

The main reason is the commsioner of the big 10. He fights against playoffs and championship games because of the money. If the Big 10 actually had to compete, they wouldnt be a lock for the BCS every year. Seriously, Im not bashing here. The biggest resistance to any kind of playoff is that guy.
